It's been a while since I last uploaded a free model. The worldcup soccer, a few weeks relaxing in the Swiss mountains and some problems with my cable company (a loose cable somewhere down our street, seriously) caused much delay, but here it finally is. Actually, it's two new models. So meet Ulrike and Annika, your friendly flight attendants of 'Free Space Airlines'. It's quite some work to build them (5 pages of parts), but you will be rewarded with your own set of sexy twins. So head over to the 'free toys' section, download the PDF and start building.

But is it art?

At the moment I'm still experimenting with small paper 'scenes'. For this project I designed the clothes as separate parts that are folded and glued over each other, instead of illustrating it on a single piece of paper. Even the tie is a separate piece. I was curious how much extra depth this would create in a model. I also had some fun making the tiny props like the suitcase and the bag.

In my next project I will try to go a little bit further and make an even bigger scene. Maybe do something with the background as well. My goal is to develop a distinct style that I will use to make '3D' illustrations that can be used as an alternative to more common 2D illustrations.

Anyone that wants to build this model can find the PDF in the 'free toys' section.

Paper Cut Expo at Graphic Design Festival Breda

I was invited to take part in the Paper Cut exhibition at the KOP gallery space in Breda, NL. The exhibition is part of the Graphic Design Festival Breda, a huge festival filled with interesting events and exhibitions exploring the different aspects of graphic design.

The setup of the Paper Cut exhibition is awesome, with two truckloads of paper being used as shelves to display all the work. Lots of papertoys to be found, who seemed to have created a party of their own. The show runs until the 20th of June, so if you're in The Netherlands there's plenty of time to check it out.

See all the photos I shot of the opening at my Flickr page.

This model consists of 5 different parts, which are combined to create a papercraft scene. There's a couple more scenes I have in mind, so expect a couple more like these in the near future.

Here's another 'leftover' from a bunch of concept sketches I did while I was designing two creatures for a paper monster book that is coming out this year. It's a fairly simple template, I even did some researching on the net to make sure it wasn't done like this before and I think I'm safe :)

I'm currently really enjoying going back to the most basic shapes to define a model. Especially after I experimented with this complex 11-part model last month that turned into a total disaster. I'm still planning to do some bigger models but I have to make sure I use the same approach as with my smaller models.

I'm working on some creatures for a book that is coming out this year and there are some leftover concepts I still want to experiment with. One of them was doing some multilayered effects like feathers and scales in a relatively 'simple' way. This model is the result of that. Hope you all figure out how to fold the feet.

And as usual it's another single-piece model of course :)
